Many have pondered the exact reasons behind certain diseases that affect the general population. having an insight into this can help prevent them from occurring. Some reasons why diseases affect a certain population is due to genetic problems or issues occurring along the way of life. Although research for these diseases are costly it is imperative for the well-being of the general population,
Scientists from the university of Miami conducted a study on ten different species of sharks, they found high amounts of toxins of mercury and B-N-methylamino-L-alanine also known as BMAA. These two toxins have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases. Sharks have been hunted for years for multiple reasons, one of which are for consumption. Consuming these toxins which are highly concentrated in Fins and Muscles can have negative effects. Neil Hammerschlag stated that consuming shark meat can pose a health risk and increase the chances for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and ALS. Not only would limiting the capture and consumption of shark's help the general population, but it would also help the survival of sharks in the wild. About 16% of the world’s shark species are in danger of going extinct, the ten species of sharks where they found the high amount of toxins are among the 16 % of species going extinct.
I choose this article because many in the general population are affected by a type of neurodegenerative disease. Alzheimer’s Association (AA) estimates that 5.4 million people in the US have Alzheimer’s disease. ("McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT." Brain Disorders: By the Numbers | McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Mar. 2017.) And by the year 2050 this number would have more than doubled. Discovering new preventative ways to decrease this number is significantly important, and finding a cure is even more important. Although we are far away from finding the cure we can start by finding preventative methods to stop diseases like Alzheimer's.
